This chapter contains the foundations of the ideal theory of monoids. Apart from standard material (quotient monoids, the theory of prime and primary ideals, and valuation theory of cancellative monoids) the following well-known topics from commutative ring theory are here for the first time presented for not necessarily cancellative monoids: Large localizations, seminormality and complete integral closure, gcd- and factorial monoids, and (Manis) valuation theory.
