This study aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the factors affecting service quality in ports, as well as practical insights for port authorities and operators to improve their service delivery and competitive position in the global maritime industry. The classic literature-based review examines the critical service quality issues affecting port operations worldwide. Synthesising research from academic and industry sources, the study looks at several aspects of service quality in ports, such as responsiveness, efficiency, safety, and customer happiness. Congestion, poor infrastructure, poor cargo clearance procedures, difficulties with regulatory compliance, and problems with human resource management are some of the major problems noted. The review also highlights the impact of technological advances and digitalisation on service quality, as well as the role of stakeholder collaboration in improving operational performance. The research also suggests strategies for improving port service quality and areas for future study after identifying gaps in current research.
