One of the primary challenges faced by the mining industry is attracting and retaining talent. The mining sector in Oman is not exempt from this phenomenon and is currently struggling to attract and retain skilled employees. Previous literature has debated the effectiveness of skills development programs on employee retention and attraction. Thus, the aim of this research paper is to explore the impact of the technology-based and engaging training programs on employee attraction and retention in the Omani mining sector. This study employed a mixed-method research approach, utilizing both quantitative and qualitative methods including archival documents, questionnaire, and interview. The Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) was used to analyse data gathered from the questionnaire, providing descriptive statistics (mean and standard deviation). Additionally, the (Azapagic in J Clean Prod 12:639–662 2004) framework for sustainable development indicators in the mining and minerals industry was employed as a research instrument for the structured interview. Interview outcomes were then benchmarked against global leading mining organizations to identify potential improvements. The findings of this study indicated that technology-based and engaging training programs have a moderate effect on employee retention and attraction within Oman’s mining industry. The results further suggested that such programs could be more effective if they are aligned with broader talent management strategies. The study recommends that Omani mining invest in relevant and well-designed technology-based training programs to enhance its social sustainability indicators.
