Economic Impacts of Geospatial Groundwater Management in Environmental Health: A Review

Geospatial Groundwater Management (GGWM) is crucial for safeguarding environmental health by applying geospatial tools and techniques for efficient resource utilization. This study discusses the pivotal role of geospatial technology in groundwater management and its economic implications for environmental health. It commences with an overview, defining the concept and underscoring its significance in sustainable resource management. The section also emphasizes the essential components and the integral role technology plays in ensuring environmental health. Economic aspects are then discussed, highlighting the importance of groundwater and the costly consequences of its depletion. The economic benefits of sustainable groundwater management are presented, specifically focusing on the role of geospatial technology in economic analysis, providing valuable insights for decision-makers. Essential geospatial tools and techniques, such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS), remote sensing, and data collection and analysis methods, are addressed. Modelling and simulation techniques are also covered, showcasing how geospatial data informs decision-making. The section examines economic modelling for groundwater management, including cost–benefit analysis, economic valuation of groundwater resources, pricing mechanisms, and financial instruments that support sustainable management efforts. The critical role of policy and regulation is examined, including the legal framework for groundwater management and government and regulatory agency involvement. Stakeholder engagement and participation are emphasized, along with community-based approaches, public–private partnerships, and challenges and solutions in this context. Challenges and barriers to GGWM are outlined, encompassing issues related to data quality, technology, finances, institutional structures, and the impact of climate change on groundwater resources.
