This chapter investigates the dynamics between Institutional Betrayal and Institutional Courage in the context of Violence against Women and Girls (VAWG), emphasising the critical need for institutions to move beyond failures and actively cultivate courageous practices to support survivors effectively. Drawing on Freyd’s eleven-step framework (2023), the chapter outlines practical strategies for fostering Institutional Courage, including legal compliance, education, sensitive response to victim disclosures, accountability, support for whistleblowers, self-study, and resource allocation. The United Nations (UN) is used as a case study of Institutional Courage in the fight against VAWG, highlighting its proactive approach through transparency, leadership training, gender mainstreaming, and trauma-informed practices, all while acknowledging its limitations. The chapter concludes by underscoring the crucial role of Institutional Courage in advancing gender equality and safeguarding women’s rights worldwide.
