To provide some scientific evidence for the ecological and environmental protection in the headwater region of the Changjiang River, this paper reviewed water environment research in the past 30 years. As results: In water, the pH value was 7.7–9.3; the concentrations of TP, NH3-N, NO3-N, COD, CODMn, Cl−, SO42−, K, Na, Ca and Mg were 0.01–0.4, 0.025–0.4, 0.21–2.1, 0 6–16.0, 0.34–5.79, 2.07–1485, 2.14–558.7, 2.1–17.6, 22.6–1017.1, 51.8–104.6 and 7.6–64.7 mg/L, respectively; the contents of EC, TH, TDS and Turb were 98.1–7314 μS/cm, 63.2–3307.0 mg/L, 50–11,548 mg/L and 1.46–4530 NTU, respectively; the concents of Fe, As, Pb, Cu, Cd, Cr, Mn, Hg and Zn were 0.02–12.7, 0.3–66.5, 0.4–31.4, 0.03–7.0, 0.004–0.8, 0.235–30.7, ND-0.89, ND-1.02 and ND-84.1 μg/L, respectively. In sediments, the contents of As, Cr, Cu, Pb, Zn, Ni, Hg and Cd were 2.6–44.6, 14.7–127, 8.22–67.1, 0.5–235.2, 27.2–1050, 9.91–95.3, 0.0086–1.29 and 0.05–2 mg/kg, respectively. The status of water environmental quality in the headwater region of the Changjiang River was generally good, but due to the influence of regional geological and other conditions, the content of some indicators varied greatly.
