Surface Water Quality Assessment in Brahmani River Basin, Odisha, for Sustainable Drinking Usage Using Multi-Criteria Decision-Making Tools and GIS

In the Indian state of Odisha, surface water is a significant source of drinking water supply for the Brahmani River. In this study, 15 water quality (WQ) characteristics that are gathered annually from seven water sources were taken to evaluate the suitability for human consumption. The time period considered is three years (2020–2023). The obtained results were computed using the TOPSIS technique (Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution) and the entropy-based water quality index (EWQI). The spatial map was plotted using ArcGIS 10.5 and the interpolation method (IDW), and compared by World Health Organization (WHO) recommendations for measuring the water quality (WQ), to check the region's care handling of home, agricultural, and industrial effluents. The aim of this study is to suggest an ongoing pollution monitoring and municipal laws to lessen the amount of pollution entering the river from both diffuse and point sources. Therefore, it is important to pay close attention to maintaining ecological sustainability.
