Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a lifestyle-related chronic disease for which intensive therapeutic lifestyle interventions and behavior modifications should be the first-line approach to prevention and treatment. Based on recent evidence, it may also be reasonable to consider intensive lifestyle interventions as a means for achieving disease remission. Non-pharmacologic/lifestyle interventions should be considered for all people with established type 2 diabetes and those who are at high risk for developing the condition. Lifestyle interventions should include dietary patterns, physical activity/exercise, sleep health, mental health, tobacco cessation, and limiting alcohol intake.
