Bariatric surgery remains one of the most effective weight management strategies for individuals regardless of the use of weight loss pharmacotherapy. The procedures have been associated with improvements in comorbid conditions and quality of life in addition to the weight loss experienced post-procedure. Individuals who meet selection criteria should undergo an extensive evaluation and optimization of comorbid conditions prior to the procedure. The bariatric procedures have experienced technical improvements since the mid-twentieth century, leading to a lower risk of death and complications. The most common procedures currently performed by clinicians include the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch, and single-anastomosis duodeno-ileal bypass with sleeve gastrectomy. Individuals will discuss with surgeons and weight management specialists to develop an individualized plan for surgical procedure, but pharmacists can play a key role in comorbid management pre- and post-procedure.
