This chapter provides an overview of adolescent cognition and brain development to explain why adolescents are more likely to engage in high-risk behaviors. Several criminology theories are introduced to explain decision-making related to juvenile delinquency and other high-risk behaviors. This chapter also covers psychosocial maturity to explain why adolescents lack the same capacity or mental ability as adults to resist delinquent or criminal behaviors. This information clarifies why culpability goes beyond knowing “right from wrong” to inform readers how juveniles differ from adults and how community support, rather than punishments, is a more effective strategy to reduce or prevent crime and delinquency.
