The mandible is the first bone to ossify [1]. Prior to that, Meckel’s cartilage had formed as a v-shaped framework within the first visceral arch in the fifth week of development [2, 3]. As Meckel’s cartilage grows quickly, it exercises shearing forces for initiating and spreading bone formation in the space between the cartilage and the adjacent skin epithelium [4–6]. Bone formation starts, where the inferior alveolar nerve crosses Meckel’s cartilage (Fig. 4.1) [7].
