Even at this stage, the additional cartilaginous islands in the bone of the mandible in the region of the incisors and on the vestibular and lingual canine are still present. Due to their location, it is clear that they have nothing to do with Meckel’s cartilage [1]. This is because the anterior part of the cartilage is completely degraded at this stage—its dorsal end, however, continues to extend into the middle ear, where it articulates with the incus as the primary jaw joint (Figs. 34.1, 34.2, and 34.3).
