The dental primordia for the first dentition have reached their early bell stages. The folding of the inner enamel epithelium already indicates the type of tooth that is developing. The stratum reticulare is well filled with fluid, which is probably available to nourish the ameloblasts. At this stage of development, however, the secretion of enamel matrix, from which the enamel later develops, has not yet begun. The mesenchyme, which is surrounded by the young tooth bell, is clearly compacted. This will later form the dental pulp (Figs. 22.1 and 22.2).
