Couples and Family Dynamics During Cancer
摘要
This chapter extensively examines the complex impact of cancer on couples and families, highlighting the critical role of social relationships in managing the disease. This chapter explores how cancer affects not only patients but also their partners and family members, emphasizing the emotional, psychological, and social challenges. Key points include the importance of maintaining a strong emotional connection, managing conflict constructively, supporting each other’s life dreams and goals, and creating a shared meaning system to foster resilience and mutual support. The literature review emphasized that while patients primarily rely on their partners for support, the stress of caregiving can significantly impact caregivers’ wellbeing, leading to emotional and physical exhaustion. Strategies from the Gottman Method that couples can use to strengthen their relationships, such as turning toward each other in times of need, engaging in stress-reducing conversations, and building a culture of appreciation and respect, are discussed. Moreover, the need for comprehensive support systems for couples with cancer, including professional counseling and community support groups, is addressed. Overall, the discussion underscores the need for a holistic approach to cancer care that includes attention to the emotional and relational impacts of the disease on both patients and their families.
