We now delve a little deeper into the structure theory of groups. We will study groups by dividing them into smaller pieces (a normal subgroup and a quotient group) and studying maps which pass this structural information from one group to another (homomorphisms). This provides us with a notion of a “simple group” (one that cannot be divided!) and a “composition series” (whereby we factorise a group into its simple constituents).
