This final interlude questions the centrality so often accorded to Shakespeare and the Anglophone world, as it returns to the editors’ extended conversation with Preti Taneja. After addressing an additional sense of mediation that can be seen in Taneja’s work on human rights and Shakespeare—that of mediation as conflict resolution—this third interlude considers the importance of understanding translations of Shakespeare on their own terms. It aims to serve as a reminder that many translations, adaptations and performances of Shakespeare have their own concerns and purposes that may have little or nothing to do with the Anglophone world—and for which even Shakespeare may be of only tangential or instrumental importance.
