Meaning of Life Based Positive Psychology Interventions and Mental Health of Students in Universities: Implications for Inclusive Education
摘要
Positive psychology is the science of human satisfaction and contentment that contributes to human understanding of resilience, happiness and quality of life and students with special needs are not exempted. It deals with human virtues that extend beyond mere survival but finding purpose in life by engaging in meaningful and pleasant activities which is necessary for all kinds of people irrespective of their race, education, gender or ability. The meaning of life within positive psychology is getting to understand life’s happenings and finding a sense of purpose that makes life worth living even to persons with disabilities. It goes beyond one’s inability and experience of personal deficits and entirely lies on the pursuit of positive experiences with what one can do which results in joy and contentment. Life-based positive psychology is not to do away with therapies that may emanate from negative experiences resulting from impairments but to explore processes for helping individuals to focus on nurturing their strengths to thrive. This is a strength-based approach where individual teachers focus on students strengths and resourcefulness instead of their shortcomings for enhancement of individual well-being. Strength focus approach is very empowering when working with individuals with disabilities.
