Positive Psychology Interventions: Navigating Social Relationships to Enhance Mental Health and Well-being of Students in Universities in Africa

The focus on mental health and well-being of students has become increasingly important in the recent years. As learning institutions and parents strive to support holistic development of students, positive psychology has emerged as a field with a dynamic and well-developed set of pathways, theories and models that advocates for students’ mental health and well-being. The various positive psychology interventions that are advocated for in the field of positive psychology have been found to promote students’ well-being and resilience in the different learning institutions. Although several studies have explored factors associated with students’ mental health and well-being, limited studies and reviews have been conducted on positive psychology interventions among university students in Africa. Hence, the chapter explores how positive psychology interventions and social relationships enhance mental health and well-being of university students. The chapter begins with an overview of positive psychology, then a discussion on mental health and social relationship issues among university students, various positive psychology interventions, benefits of social connection and relationship among university student. Lastly, the chapter provides the summary by giving the implications of the various positive psychology interventions and socialization.
