Piezoelectric Sensors and Actuators for Electronic Applications

In recent years, with advancements in nanotechnology a variety of polymer-based materials have been originated. The piezoelectric polymers besides their composites are very auspicious for a wide range of applications. Piezoelectric polymers facilitate the direct conversion of electrical and mechanical energy, making them attractive for practical applications, including sensors, actuators, and energy harvesting devices. Owing to the novel chemical and physical properties of piezoelectric polymers, broaden their covering in flexible as well as soft electronic gimmicks. Especially, in stretchable, skin-attachable, and strain sensors designed for wearable applications are necessitated for multipurpose potential implementations including individualized health care monitoring, recognition of human activities, human–machine interface (HMI) systems, soft robotics, and so forth. This chapter offers an overview of sensors and actuators for soft electronics developed by employing piezoelectric polymer composites. The focuses have been paid on the working principles, fabrication procedures, structure of the devices and real-life applications of polymer composite based sensors and actuators working under different modes. In conclusion, the existing challenges and future perspectives of the piezoelectric sensors and actuators made with polymer composites are highlighted.
