This chapter challenges the traditional hierarchical frameworks within evolutionary theory. It begins by offering a concise overview of hierarchy theory in its general sense, tracing its early applications in an evolutionary context during the 1960s and 1980s. This chapter mostly presents theoretical and philosophical arguments to challenge the two prevailing models of the hierarchy theory of evolution, the Hierarchical Theory of Selection and the Hierarchy Theory of Evolution (sensu Eldredge and Salthe), with a particular emphasis on criticizing the latter model. For example, the Hierarchical Theory of Selection is mainly considered by species selection; however, selection does not seem to operate at that level, and no concrete examples exist to validate it. Meanwhile, the Hierarchy Theory of Evolution is flawed because its structure of two hierarchies (genealogical and ecological) is based on the outdated replicator-interactor framework for identifying evolving entities. Overall, this chapter argues that such models lack proper integration of Evo-Devo insights.
