This study aims to battle the widely held perception of travel being an in-between limbo that lacks both value and utility, by proposing a service design concept that encourages on-road travelers to take control of their visual travel experience and enjoy the best parts of their journey for longer. With an autonomous future on the horizon, and the need for manual vehicle control slowly but surely on its way to becoming obsolete, the current destination-centered travel perception is expected to become more apparent as the role of the traveler shifts to a considerably more passive experience. This shift is expected to result in a loss of interest in the outside environment and overall travel journey. Autonomous vehicles, however, also have the potential to allow passengers to disconnect with the physical location of the vehicle, which opens the gateway to developing new and engaging journey-centered passenger experiences. This study takes the opportunity to utilize real-time dash cam data to provide passengers with a dynamic and visually engaging means of hopping from one vehicle’s view to another. This is to be made possible by removing the constraints of physical location and allow view hopping to any vehicle’s view along a given route. By reimagining the utility of dash cam data, this explorative study aims to increase the perceived worthwhileness of travel time and thus contribute to higher travel satisfaction in autonomous on-road travel contexts.
