Autonomous driving is facing a time of reckoning. A public consensus towards autonomous vehicles remains doubtful due to issues with service trials across various cities, prompting many players in the field to review their plans. In light of this shifting context, we speculate a future where remote driving is offered as a service in privately owned vehicles as an intermediary solution. As part of our design-led research on future mobility in Japan, this study investigates the human interactions for remote driving from both the driver and passenger-ends of the service. We conducted a futurespective design workshop where participants were tasked to create tangible artefacts to describe the interfaces required. As a result, we identified several human implications of remote driving, in particular the gaps in situational communication between remote driver and passenger. These gaps suggest opportunities for novel automotive interfaces and highlight the evolving social roles of drivers and passengers with the advent of robust, low-latency vehicle connectivity. Insights from our study extend to other forms of remotely-driven services beyond in-vehicle transportation. In addition, our method detailed in this paper can be adapted to explore innovation and their social impact in various fields at the intersection of science and society.
