This chapter provides a concise overview of various synthetic organic yellow dyes which are not discussed elsewhere. The synthetic dyes belonging to the yellow colour spectrum can be categorised into three distinct organic groups. The first group encompasses the nitro dyes, namely Picric acid, Martius yellow and Naphthol yellow S. These dyes are described in Chap. 10 : ‘The nitro dyes’. The second group consists of azo dyes, including Aniline yellow, the first azo dye, described in Chap. 14 : ‘The early azo dyes: Aniline yellow, Bismarck brown, Chrysoidine, Orangés, Fast Red A’. Finally, the third group comprises miscellaneous dyes, such as Fluorescein, Chrysoline, Quinoline yellow and Auramine. Chap. 16 , entitled ‘Bright organic red colours: the history and analysis of Fluorescein, Eosins, Phloxines, Erythrosines, Rose Bengals, Rhodamines, and their derivatives’, offers an exploration of Fluorescein and Chrysoline, highlighting their historical significance and analytical aspects in relation to vibrant organic red colours. The present chapter centres on the remaining yellow dyes: Metanil yellow, Alizarine yellow GG, Brilliant yellow, Tartrazine yellow, Flavazine L, Auramine and derivatives and Quinoline yellow, providing an overview of their history, characteristics and properties.
