Formula 1 (F1) racing demands a unique fusion of physical resilience, cognitive acuity, and neuro-ophthalmic precision from drivers, who must navigate complex track conditions under extreme speeds and G-forces. Success in F1 hinges on optimized neuro-ophthalmic abilities, including dynamic visual acuity, peripheral awareness, depth perception, and advanced eye tracking. Core reflexes, such as the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) and VOR suppression, are essential for stabilizing gaze amidst rapid vehicle movements. Additionally, accommodation and convergence processes enable drivers to maintain sharp focus across varying distances on the track. Despite these fundamental skills, current literature lacks comprehensive exploration of neuro-ophthalmic requirements specific to high-speed motorsports. This manuscript systematically reviews the visual and neurological adaptations vital for competitive racing, presenting an in-depth analysis of F1 drivers’ perceptual-motor demands. By examining key neuro-ophthalmic principles, this study offers insights into the unique visual processing strategies and motor responses that facilitate optimal performance in F1 racing.
