Ice hockey is the fastest team sport and demands exceptional visual and motor skills due to its high-speed and high-contact nature. This chapter explores ophthalmic principles critical to hockey performance such as dynamic visual acuity, saccades, visual field, vestibulo-ocular reflex, and line-of-sight and color vision. Eye injuries, especially orbital injuries, remain a significant concern in hockey, though protective helmets with visors have greatly reduced the incidence of severe injuries. Concussions and subconcussive impacts can also impair neuro-ophthalmic function, highlighting the importance of protective helmets and other protective measures in place. This chapter underscores the integration of neuro-ophthalmic principles in optimizing player performance and safety, with a call for further research to enhance the understanding and application of these principles in ice hockey.
