A Little Book About a Vast Memory
摘要
In this book Luria’s intention was to discover how an extraordinary memory capacity affects one’s personality, habits, imagination, behavior, and relationships. He explored how such memory development influences the overall structure of an individual’s personality and lifestyle, a rare approach in scientific psychology. Solomon Shereshevsky, (1886−1958) a subject of Alexander Luria’s famous study, possessed an extraordinary memory and an intense form of synesthesia, a condition where senses are intertwined. This phenomenon, largely unknown during Luria’s time, is now recognized and studied, with synesthesia societies promoting awareness worldwide. Jerome Bruner praised this work for its advanced integration of psychological, neurological, and personal aspects of cognitive disorders, concluding “Luria in his time was a visitor from the future.” This book inspired various artistic works, including films, books, and theatrical performances which explore themes of people with special talents, reflecting Luria’s influence on both science and art. Luria’s work continues to bridge science and art, deepening understanding of memory, identity, and the human mind.
