Challenges, Opportunities, and Future Perspectives Regarding the Valorization of Agro-industrial Waste

The concept of agroindustry is an environment that encompasses activities related to the three classical sectors of the economy: primary (agriculture, livestock, forestry, and aquaculture), secondary (transformation and processing), and tertiary (distribution). The agroindustry is critical in supplying food and essential materials for modern life. However, significant quantities of products derived from the agro-industrial sector generate significant quantities of waste. The utilization of agro-industrial waste becomes a challenging process because the material disposed of exhibits considerable heterogeneity in its composition, hindering the adoption of large-scale measures to reduce potential damage. To utilize agro-industrial waste, one must overcome numerous challenges, beginning with socioeconomic barriers and extending to technological limitations related to equipment or waste conversion methods. One alternative to overcoming the socioeconomic barrier is employing agro-industrial waste converted into high-value bioproducts in various commercial sectors, such as pharmaceuticals, food, energy generation, and chemical industries. As for the technological challenges of agro-industrial waste utilization, there are several ongoing research initiatives, innovation efforts, and regulations aimed at improving the utilization of this material in various sectors, with particular emphasis on the food and pharmaceutical industries. A growing trend in agro-industrial waste utilization involves the concept of biorefineries, where processed organic material with minimal or no waste is entirely transformed into high-value products suitable for commercialization or energy generation. This chapter will address the main challenges and potential solutions for using agro-industrial waste to reduce potential environmental harm and add value to materials that would otherwise be discarded.
