With their antennae flies, bees, moths and ants can perceive all kinds of scents. They recognize food, dangers and also the scent of conspecifics. On the antennae, there are olfactory hairs, the sensilla, inside of which are olfactory cells with scent sensors, so-called receptors. Each olfactory cell is a specialist; it only produces one type of scent receptor. The wall of the olfactory hair is porous, so that the scent substances can reach the sensory cells from the outside. There, the chemical information is converted into electrical impulses, which are transmitted via the long nerve fibers of the sensory cells into the brain, which, in insects, is very similar to those in humans and vertebrates. The electrical pulses, in turn, generate odor-specific excitation patterns, by which the insects recognize the different scent substances.
