With the arrival of autumn comes the common cold, and with it, suddenly, the familiar experience: everything tastes like nothing. The nose is blocked, and neither the scent of your favorite food nor your own perfume can penetrate the mucus. This is normal. Only if the condition persists should one consider having one’s sense of smell tested. A doctor can identify where the causes lie. Is it in the olfactory system in the nose, because the cold viruses have permanently damaged the olfactory cells? Or in the processing of smells in the brain, because a neurodegenerative disease is looming?
