Researcher, writer, and former Harvard professor Richard Katz adapted the term “synergy” to describe what he observed studying alongside traditional healers in the Kalahari Desert, Fiji, Alaska, North Dakota, and Saskatchewan. Katz believes that synergy, rooted in Indigenous approaches to healthcare, can be usefully applied to modern mental health systems. This article, which takes the form of a travelog, describes a week spent with Katz during the filming of a documentary about his life and work. By participating in this creative process alongside Katz and the other mental health professionals appearing in the film, I was able to explore Katz’s theories about synergy, while also seeing how his teachings were applied by himself and others.
