Dual-military couples with one or dual surgeon spouses face unique and elevated challenges of both military surgeon life and dual-military couple life. In this chapter, we begin with an overview of the demographics of dual-military couples as well as the results of an internal dual-military surgeon survey conducted by the authors. Suggestions and considerations for navigating and optimizing career and family goals in the setting of surgical work schedules, co-location or physical separation, military readiness, and family readiness are discussed. Impacts and options for the dual-military surgeon couple regarding GME and surgical training, deployments, and childcare are reviewed. Additionally, resources such as service policies in place for dual-military members, and psychosocial support are provided.
