A Historical Perspective on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusivity in the Military
摘要
Historically, the military has led diversity efforts, yet higher ranks still lack diverse leaders. Diversity in military surgery involves valuing individual differences, enhancing innovative solutions, and improving patient outcomes. Equity ensures uniform quality in healthcare services, regardless of personal characteristics, requiring the elimination of biases and equitable representation. Inclusion promotes a culture of belonging and mutual respect, involving all medical team members in decision-making processes, thereby improving teamwork and surgical outcomes. Although DEI initiatives are no longer in effect in the DoD, this chapter will review the historic achievements in military surgery.
