The two main parties of the early Republican period encapsulated and politically managed the structure of significant fractures in our country, primarily the centre-periphery divide, anchoring post-fascist Italian society to democracy. Carlo Guarnieri (2006) argues that it was precisely the strong subcultural base and the related bloc vote in favour of the Christian Democracy party in the “white” zone that made it possible to achieve the stability of the Italian political system, unlike the Weimar Republic and the Fourth French Republic.
