Competencies and Principles in End-of-Life and Grief Support
摘要
This chapter explores the essential competencies and guiding principles for end-of-life and grief support. It discusses the differences between grief support, counseling, and therapy, outlining key principles, goals, and major techniques. Critical components and objectives of end-of-life support are also explored. Synthesizing the various professional associations’ guidelines, the chapter addresses ethical principles and guidelines, emphasizing the importance of advocacy, professional integrity, and ongoing professional development. It details the 4A4C competency framework, which serves as a holistic guide for helping professionals to provide compassionate and sustainable service while ensuring their own well-being and growth. Communication strategies are also discussed, offering practical advice on fostering validation and a compassionate presence. The chapter discusses self-care and resilience building to prevent compassion fatigue and vicarious grief. Resilience is not solely an individual trait; therefore, this chapter also calls for institutional, community, and societal practices to build a robust and sustainable support system for all. Given the critical role of cultural competence, it is discussed in more detail in Chap. 2 : Culture in End-of-Life and Grief Support.
