Culture in End-of-Life and Grief Support
摘要
Culture is a dynamic and multifaceted system that shapes human perceptions and experiences. Recognizing the diversity among and within cultural groups and respecting individuals as unique cultural beings is essential to understanding death and grief experiences and providing person-centered support. The chapter examines the multidimensions of culture and the connections among cultural awareness, competence, and humility. Cultural awareness involves understanding the diverse cultural contexts and intersectional identities that influence an individual’s experiences. Cultural competence builds on this awareness by developing practical skills, knowledge, and respectful practices that address diverse cultural needs. Cultural humility, essential for sustaining genuine connections, emphasizes ongoing self-reflection and learning to mitigate biases and power imbalances. By combining these principles, professionals can create inclusive, equitable, and effective care environments that are culturally responsive. The chapter incorporates real-world case studies, practical guidelines, and policy recommendations to apply the cultural framework to enhance end-of-life and grief support.
