The phenomenon of spontaneous rotation of an ice disc on the surface of still water has been the subject of experimental and physical modelling studies. The salinity and depth of the experimental vessel have been measured as a function of the rotational speed of the ice sample. It has been demonstrated that the presence of several melting centres can impart not only translational but also rotational motion to the ice disc. This sign is in turn determined by the mutual arrangement of the melting centres, and can take both positive and negative values.
