This chapter details the various ways that AI can be employed to achieve SDGs. Using AI to achieve the UN SDGs is challenging due to several technical, ethical, and systemic issues. AI systems rely on large amounts of high-quality data, often unavailable or fragmented in regions where the SDGs are most critical. Data disparities and lack of infrastructure, especially in low-income countries, create significant barriers to AI deployment. Additionally, algorithmic bias and inequality in AI systems can exacerbate existing disparities, undermining the inclusive nature of the SDGs. Ethical concerns such as data privacy, surveillance, and the misuse of AI further complicate its application, particularly in sensitive areas like healthcare and governance. Harnessing the AI potential in driving the attainment of the UN SDGs requires addressing challenges related to data integration, bias, and ethical considerations. Paying attention to the explicit risks of deploying AI to achieve SDGs is also prudent. Through collaboration, capacity building, and responsible governance, AI can become a powerful tool for achieving a sustainable, equitable, and resilient future that leaves no one behind. Aligning AI innovation with the principles of the SDGs while mitigating, managing, and leveraging the SDGs’ interdependences and interlinkages is essential and non-negotiable.
