Deploying AI to Achieve UN SDGs: Details of the 17 Goals
摘要
This chapter articulates the deployment of AI to achieve the SDGs for each of the 17 goals. Using AI to achieve the UN SDGs is challenging due to several technical, ethical, and systemic issues. However, it can be done. Indeed, AI systems rely on large amounts of high-quality data, often unavailable or fragmented in regions where the SDGs are most critical. Data disparities and lack of infrastructure, especially in low-income countries, create significant barriers to AI deployment. Additionally, algorithmic bias and inequality in AI systems can exacerbate existing disparities, undermining the inclusive nature of the SDGs. Ethical concerns such as data privacy, surveillance, and the misuse of AI further complicate its application, particularly in sensitive areas like healthcare and governance. The energy-intensive nature of AI technologies also poses environmental challenges, potentially conflicting with some sustainability goals. The appropriate AI governance, legislation, and ethical guidelines must be developed and implemented. More significantly, the AI interventions for the 17 SDGs can only be successful within a well-structured strategic framework. As proposed in this chapter, AI can become a powerful tool for achieving all 17 SDGs through collaboration, integration, political unity, capacity building, and strategic thinking. Both the Global North and Global South can deploy AI to achieve the SDGs. However, it cannot be business as usual.
