This chapter explains the importance of designing, developing, and executing an AI adoption framework to address the 17 UN SDGs. The starting point is laying out the framework’s principles, objectives, and activities. The key contribution is a detailed AI strategic framework with six key components: Vision, Strategy, Policy, Governance, Legislation/Regulation, and Implementation Matrix. Emphasis is also placed on the centrality of infrastructure, investments, global collaboration, partnerships, and capacity building. Scale and harmonisation are emphasised by discussing regional and continental economic integration and political unity. The strengths and limitations of the African Union’s Continental AI Strategy, launched in August 2024, are also discussed and reviewed as a foundational source in crafting a more grounded, dynamic, and efficacious AI strategic framework for Africa. The example of deploying AI in a holistic, integrated and strategic approach that involves the African continent, its regions, and its countries can be replicated in other regions of the world as they pursue the SDG agenda. A national AI strategic framework must anchor AI efforts. AI can become a key SDG enabler through coordinated efforts, a commitment to shared values, and an ecosystem approach. By integrating all the elements and initiatives presented in this chapter into a comprehensive AI adoption framework, stakeholders can enhance the effectiveness, inclusivity, and sustainability of AI deployments on the SDG journey.

摘要
