Microfluidic Micropumps: Advancing Biomedical Applications with Micro Electromechanical-Based Systems (MEMS)
摘要
Microfluidic micropumps utilizing Micro Electromechanical Systems (MEMS) technology have emerged as a promising tool for advancing biomedical applications, particularly in medication delivery and actuation purposes. This chapter provides a brief overview of the different types of micropumps and their components, as well as their performance characteristics. Micropumps can be broadly classified into two categories based on their actuation mechanisms: mechanical and non-mechanical pumps. Mechanical micropumps rely on physical displacement to generate fluid flow, while non-mechanical micropumps utilize alternative energy sources for actuation. The acquisition of actuation energy is a critical factor in driving fluid flow within these micropumps. In this chapter, we aim to introduce the concept of micro-pumps and provide insights into their components and performance attributes. The potential applications of microfluidic micropumps in medication delivery and various biomedical fields are also discussed. By leveraging MEMS technology, these micropumps offer precise control, miniaturization capabilities, and enhanced functionality, enabling advancements in targeted drug delivery, diagnostics, and other biomedical applications. Understanding the design principles, operational mechanisms, and performance characteristics of microfluidic micropumps is essential for harnessing their full potential in biomedical research and healthcare. Further research and development efforts are required to optimize their performance, explore new applications, and address challenges associated with integration, reliability, and compatibility with biological systems. By leveraging the advantages of MEMS-based micropumps, we can unlock new possibilities for improved therapeutic outcomes and advancements in biomedical sciences.
