Vegetation of Teide National Park

The phytosociological methodology of the Zurich-Montpellier School or Braun-Blanquet (Pflanzensoziologie, 3rd edn. Wien, 1964) has been used to study the vegetation of the Teide National Park (Martín Osorio et al., Estudio Bioclimático y Fitocenótico comparativo de la alta cumbre canaria: Tenerife—La Palma. Islas Canarias. Phytocoenologia 37(3–4):663–697, 2007). Phytosociology is a science that emanates from Geobotany, a discipline that has deep historical roots in Tenerife due to the visit that the famous naturalist, Alexander von Humboldt, made in 1799 and that marked the beginnings of Geobotany as a science specialized in the study of the distribution of plant species on the planet. Humboldt represents the first link in the scientific knowledge of the landscape (Díaz González, Pasado, presente y futuro de la Fitosociología española. Lazaroa 25:3–13, 2004) and Geobotany offers an ideal support for the planning and study of the potential of the territory, of the environmental quality and ultimately of the analysis of the landscape and its restoration. This chapter presents the results of the study of the vegetal landscape of the Teide National Park, through the Series of Potential Vegetation and Current Vegetation of the territory, which are expressed in a detailed cartography that helps the management and conservation of this protected area.
