Cultivating the Future: The Role of IT and AI in Soil Sustainability

The integration of information technology (IT), computer science, and artificial intelligence (AI) with big data analytics and cloud computing is reshaping soil management in Indonesian agriculture. With 10 of the 12 major global soil types, Indonesia’s diverse agroecological environments underscore the need for tailored approaches. This chapter examines current and emerging IT applications, emphasizing the importance of customized strategies for Indonesian soils. It explores the use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), remote sensing, and precision agriculture for real-time soil monitoring and analysis. Technologies, such as WebGIS, mobile apps, and sensors, provide farmers with site-specific information, promoting sustainable practices. Farmer and community engagement through participatory platforms contribute to a continuous data-sharing cycle, enriching the database. Despite challenges like limited infrastructure and digital literacy, the integration of IT in agriculture shows promise for improving productivity, managing land more effectively and efficiently, ensuring food sustainability, and fostering environmental stewardship in Indonesia.
