Food and energy systems exert significant influence on societies, economies, and the environment, thereby playing a pivotal role in achieving various Nationally Determined Contributions and Sustainable Development Goals. Restricted availability of energy at every stage of the agricultural and food production processes constrains the capacity of farmers and agricultural businesses to enhance productivity, reduce wastage, and adapt to a shifting climate and unforeseen challenges. With the agriculture sector accounting for approximately 30% of global energy consumption and apportioning to nearly 33% of greenhouse gas emissions worldwide it is now a prerequisite to integrate clean energy in the agri-sector to reduce overall environmental footprint. The deliberated study is a concise compendium in this direction highlighting how the assimilation of renewable energy holds opportunities towards transforming the agri-systems. Additionally, the literature discusses the applicability of renewable energy in strengthening agricultural value chains and optimization of overall land use. Further, the manuscript highlights various challenges such as variability and intermittency, high installation cost, infrastructural limitations, impediments in policies, regulations & market access, etc., in mainstreaming along with seeking solutions for the same. The excerpt also deliberates on the recommendations for decision-makers to facilitate more investments and mobilization of funds towards sustainable integration of these two sects not only for large stakeholders but also for the small and marginal custodians. Only then the renewable energy and food systems promptly advance towards ensuring food & energy security, besides reducing drudgery, furnishing gender equality &women empowerment, climate change resilience, and generation of sustainable livelihood avenues at the local scale.
