This chapter outlines the basic analytical procedures for stable Ba isotope analysis, with a particular focus on multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (MC-ICP-MS). Key topics include sample digestion protocols, chemical purification methods, mass spectrometry setup and data reduction techniques. In addition, adjustments to MC-ICP-MS plasma operating conditions are discussed as a strategy to accommodate increased ion loads from complex sample matrices. Higher plasma temperature increases the ionisation efficiency and reduces the non-spectral matrix effects. This leads to more accurate and precise Ba isotope measurements with MC-ICP-MS. I expect that the plasma operating protocol developed for stable Ba isotope analysis is also applicable for other isotope measurements using MC-ICP-MS.

摘要
