Synergizing Sustainability by Hybridizing Aquaponics for Energy Saving and Food Production in Warm Climate Residential Environments: BaityKool (BK), a Bio-Inspired Dwelling Prototype in Dubai-UAE
摘要
Due to rising temperature and the fluctuations in the weathers condition, a severe crisis is faced by the agriculture industry around the world. Agriculture being the largest consumer of fresh water globally upto 70%, long-standing farming methods which was sturdy and dependable, now encounter numerous challenges jeopardizing global food security. Issues such as imminent water shortages and the gradual depletion of fertile soils present significant threats to traditional agriculture. Consequently, the conventional farming sector finds itself at a crucial juncture, compelling the adoption of innovative, resource-conscious techniques that can adapt to changing conditions. The aquaponics system developed in the Baitykool lab represents an initial move toward utilizing existing surfaces and sunlight, contrasting with interior-controlled environments that consume space and energy for air conditioning and lighting. Aquaponics, widely recognized for large-scale food production, holds significant potential as a farming solution. This research’s importance lies in advancing the integration of aquaponics directly into the structural walls of residential buildings. A prototype home called BaityKool won the “sustainability” prize at the inaugural Solar Decathlon Middle East competition in November 2018 in Dubai. The research entails a detailed evaluation of BaityKool's aquaponic system efficiency, energy saving capacity, and food yield within Dubai's warm climate. This approach not only signifies a sustainable solution for energy and food production but also serves as an educational platform. The outcomes of this research hold promise for transforming residential design in hot dry regions. By addressing food security, promoting energy sustainability, and advocating for environmental conservation, BaityKool represents a significant stride toward fostering a more sustainable living.
