Dermal substitutes have been developed during recent decades. IntegraIntegra, a substitute for dermisDermis, was initially developed by Burke and Yannas. This device is derived from bovine collagenCollagen and contains glycosaminoglycans. Safety issues (prions) have been solved. The device was initially proposed for burns coverage, and although randomized studies have determined the efficacy of the technique, no statistical difference has been observed in terms of scar characteristics of the obtained skin tissue. Alternative collagenCollagen or noncollagen products of different thicknesses were more recently developed, with or without siliconeSilicone covering films. These products can be derived from porcine, bovine, or human origin. We may now divide dermal substitutes into two categories: double-layer DSDSDermal substitute and single-layer DS.
