Free-living coralline red algae (CRA) nodular structures are found in aggregations covering huge extensions of continental shelf bottom, from the poles to the tropics, from the intertidal zone to 200 m deep, they are known as rhodolith beds. The most extensive, abundant and diverse rhodolith beds in the world are found off the Brazilian coast, with estimates of occupying an area from 167,000 to 230,000 km2. From a regional perspective, these organisms, which are also important reef builders, are essential components producing oxygen, consolidating substrata, and functioning as autogenic ecosystem engineers and foundation species. One of the main characteristics of CRA is the deposition of calcium carbonate with Mg-rich calcite, a process that influences the global carbon cycle, but which also makes taxonomy based on morpho-anatomical aspects of this group somewhat challenging. This chapter brings together the efforts of the of the Rhodolith Workgroup and describes the recent advances in rhodolith studies, highlighting their distinctive features, mapping habitat suitability, describing community structure, ecosystem functions and threats to rhodolith beds.
