A Color out of (Narrative) Space: How Conversational AI Can Play Gamebooks Enabling Learning in the Process
摘要
The so-called “ergodic texts” require a non-trivial effort by the reader to enjoy them. Between texts and video games, gamebooks represent an example of ergodic texts since the fruition of the narrative depends on the reader’s choices. In 2023, an Italian streamer showed that conversational AI tools (i.e. ChatGPT) could “play” gamebooks while these are presented by a human user. This interaction was entertaining for the viewers. Based on this example, we presented ChatGPT with a gamebook in a more structured way, reporting how choices were performed by the AI tool and how it approached the interactive narrative. This peculiar case study allowed us to identify three interesting outcomes from involving ChatGPT in gamebooks playing: (1) a new way for humans to enjoy the medium, partly as a co-player of AI and partly as a spectator; (2) a possible resource (for writers and game designers) to test any form of interactive narrative; (3) a source of insights about how a conversational AI tool “thinks” and provides answers which could be valuable in order to advance the comprehension and implementation of AI tools in educational and gaming contexts.
