This chapter proposes life-centered design as a framework for building better cities and communitiesCommunity. By their very nature, cities are complex systems speckled with unintended consequences that create complex feedback loops. Their inherent complexity poses challenges for implementing change initiatives that aim to bring sustainable living and a more-than-humanMore-than-human perspective to urban spaces. The chapter introduces three intertwined approaches to help designers and decision-makers address these challenges through life-centered principles. First, it discusses the role of systems thinking to better understand the challenges and identify opportunities to intervene. Second, it proposes the ‘city-as-organization’ metaphor to drive positive change. Applying this metaphor, the chapter investigates how strategic design tactics—used to create strategic change in organizations—translate to the design of cities. Third, the chapter discusses the role of anticipatory policy to drive change by applying ethnographic research and co-design workshops as mechanisms to understand what is unfolding and what futures might be possible. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the role of key performance indicatorsIndicators (KPIs) for getting buy-in and implementing life-centeredness.
