Smart Cities emphasize citizens’ role in co-creating and managing urban spaces. However, involving citizens in decision-making is time-consuming and generates unstructured data. Alongside, social media has led to the rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies. Sentiment Analytics (SA), which uses natural language processing and machine learning to analyze user’s opinions and meet the growing demand for such services. Through a meta-analysis, this research highlights a significant gap between the potential of these advanced analytics (SA and ML) and the solutions developed to process citizen contributions and make them meaningful and influential, especially when it comes to feelings and opinions. Indeed, research in this area needs multidisciplinary approaches to guide and direct studies and innovations.
